Monkey Grinder

I heard the name. It was not unlike the name the crows were croaking.
I felt the wind, felt all its little ghosts and felt their stroking.

And when he came, some juggling and a game. He smells of camphor.
The bells upon his hat hypnotize a wandering cat as urchins scamper.

A broken music box, a dogface doll,
a chain upon a figure in a filthy shawl.

As the monkey grinder grips his gurdy at his hips, the children shudder.
And all the streets are dumb like Krishna with his thumb inside the butter.

But now, there is a sound and it's the rattle of the clown the collar strangles.
Till the naked screaming sky spits in every waking eye and on their bangles.

A broken music box, a dogface doll,
a chain upon a figure in a filthy shawl.

Now everyone is gone. There was night and there was dawn. The rubbish lingers,
and the spirits all have flown back to hold their banshee thrones with oily fingers.
