lyrics

When Hunger came to supper
she met us with surprise.
We didn't hear her ribs a-jangling,
didn't feel her gnawing eyes.

I sat her while you took her cap.
We hustled to the pantry
It smelled of cloves that weren't there
It smelled of phantom candies.

"The stove's been cold for 30 days,
the well is thick with tar,
So sweep your teeth for year-old crumbs.
How full my journey! And how far!"

When Hunger came to supper
she tickled at our chins;
the tickle burned inside our throats
on its way to our shins.

We hadn't but a scrap to give --
the spotted scrap upon our backs.
We broke our fingernails preparing
between our "sorry"s for our lack.

When Hunger came to supper
we knew our race was old.
Our girls and boys are born with beards
Their bellies are too taut and cold.

Our bellies are all ribbed with worms
that starve from our starvation;
we hear their muscles as they twist
beneath our inflammation.

"The stove's been cold for 30 days,
the well is thick with tar,
So sweep your teeth for year-old crumbs.
How full my journey! And how far!"
